TILT SWITCHES (Hg)

in Glass Housings

GÜNTHER

miniature inclination switches are manufactured with automated processes on machinery designed in-house.

The use of statistical process control (SPC) assures consistent high quality.

1) Special Characteristics

* Switching capacity up to 100 W/VA
* High immunity against surges
* Low and constant contact resistance
* Exceptional repeatability
* Hermetically sealed
* Arc-suppression due to protective gas atmosphere
* Low actuation power
* Compact construction and light weight
* Long operating and shelf life expectancy
* Silent operation
* No additional contact force because of the mercury
* Most economical solution versus mechanical switches

2) Operating Angle

The switching angle of an inclination switch is best described by two different operating angles: the differential operating angle (that angle between the "just-closed" and "just-opened" positions) and the device operating angle (that angle which a mounted switch must be inclined in order to guarantee switching). The device operating angle is generally 1.5 to 2 times larger than the differential operating angle of the switch itself.
Switching angles smaller than those listed are also available for special applications. Please contact us for more information.

3) Operation and Switching Capacity

The parameters listed in the technical data offer limiting values for switching reliability and life expectancy. It is important to operate within these limits. The minimum switching voltage is highly dependent on the electrode material used. GÜNTHER switch type 3705 is specifically designed for electronic applications or use with 1,5V battery supply voltages.

4) Contact Types

The GÜNTHER switches 3703, 3705 and 3803 may be used as either normally open or normally closed switches. Switch 3903 may be used as change over switch whereby two opposing electrodes are to be switched together. It may also be used as a normally open or normally closed switch for two separate electrical circuits. Switch type 4753, an 'omnidirectional' switch, operates when being inclined in any direction (360°) out of a vertical position.

5) Lead Cables

All standard inclination switches are delivered with pre-tinned electrode terminals - without lead cables (see dimensional drawing). When soldering lead cables onto the electrode terminals, use a temperature-controlled soldering iron with a maximum capacity of 15 Watt. The distance between soldering point and glass should be more than 2 mm in order to prevent any excess heating of the glass seal. Cutting or bending the free electrode terminals can only be done with special tooling as improper treatment can result in damage to the switch.

We recommend that GÜNTHER makes all mechanical changes as well as lead mounting. GÜNTHER switches are also available with customized connection leads. Our standard cables are highly flexible PVC copper leads with a diameter of 0.25 mm² and a length of 100 mm and an operating temperature range of -5...+80°C. The free ends of the cable are tin-dipped. When ordering GÜNTHER switches specify type number 001 for switches with lead cables or 002 for standard switches without lead cable.

6) Housing

Inclination switches are, due to their compact construction, easily mounted into packages.

We recommend epoxy-sealing into either plastic or metal housings. A series of ready-to-mount housings are available.

7.) Using Tilt Switches as Acceleration Sensors

The Hg-tilt switches can also be used as acceleration sensors..

With the mathematic relation tan() = g the switching angle can be converted

based upon the assembly position into the multiple gravitational acceleration.

() =switching angle in°, g = gravitational acceleration )
